Phi Alpha Theta is the international honor society for students of history. Founded at the University of Arkansas in 1921, the organization has since grown to more than 740 chapters in fifty states. Since its inception, the number of initiates has risen above 200,000.
Membership is composed of students and professors who have demonstrated achievements in the study and writing of history. The objective of the society is the encouragement of research, good teaching, publication and the exchange of thought among historians. Phi Alpha Theta is designed to bring students and teachers together both intellectually and socially, while supporting historical research and publications by its members.
To become a member of Phi Alpha Theta, undergraduate students must complete at least 12 semester hours in History with a GPA of at least 3.1 in History and a GPA of 3.0 or better overall. A maximum of 3 credit hours of online, transfer, AP or IB credits can be applied to the membership requirement. The membership fee is $50.00. Inductees will receive a certificate of recognition and four issues of Phi Alpha Theta's quarterly publication, The Historian. The society also grants scholarships and paper awards; notices are placed in the bulletin board outside the History Department.
